Application Exercise 9d: Australia’s commitment under the NDC

  1. Australia’s current commitment is to reduce emissions by 43% below 2005 by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050.

  1. Previous strategies have focussed on the deployment of technology and encouragement of the private sector to adopt new technologies through the provision of subsidies (e.g. under the emissions reduction fund) instead of the imposition of taxes (e.g. a carbon tax).

  1. Strategies referred to by the Labor government elected in 2022 in its NDC statement include accelerated decarbonisation of Australia’s electricity grid, investment in renewables manufacturing and low emissions technology, development of clean energy industries, declining baselines for major emitters, accelerating the uptake of electric vehicles and reporting requirements for larger businesses.
